Erkin Koray - Mechul: Singles & Rarities LP

Over two years in the making, Sublime Frequencies has come up with the best collection of Erkin Koray's music to date. Given access to the legendary Turkish guitarist's archives, the dudes compiled a stellar collection of Koray's songs from the 1960s and 70s. Ranging from psych to traditional instrumentals, all of the songs here have Koray's unique sound - a great fusion of Western rock and Turkish trad styles. It is the kind of music that, when it first came out, both angered and excited his fellow Turks. But like most people way ahead of their time, Koray is now looked at as one of the most important figures in Turkish music, especially Turkish rock & roll. Lazy Westerners call him the Turkish Jimi Hendrix, but that doesn't do Koray justice unless it means that he is as talented and innovative as Hendrix. Style-wise, Koray developed something all his own. When announced, the thought of this collection really excited me. Once I heard it, a couple months ago, I was more than excited. I have a lot of Koray, some full albums, some collections cobbled from singles and LPs. This one is the best: No question about it. Very much recommended. (Sublime Frequencies)
